Link, a robot tutor for my kids
I built Link in six days so it would be ready before school started. It's a desk robot: a Raspberry Pi 5 inside a retro tin-toy shell I designed in code and 3D printed at home.
A 5-inch touchscreen is its animated face, a conference speakerphone is its ears and voice, and a green arcade button on its head wakes it up and puts it to sleep. The brain is Google's Gemini Live API, so the kids just talk and it answers out loud. It knows each kid's interests and learning goals, turns practice into games, and picks up where the last session left off.
I made the product calls and used AI coding agents for most of the engineering. Safety was a design rule from day one: Link holds no personal information, only listens when it's awake, and saves a transcript of every conversation for me to review. Those transcripts drive the tuning too. When the kids said it talked too much and asked too many questions, I read the logs and retuned it.
My son named it Link, after the Zelda hero.
